Questions and answers
Everything about how a trust check works, for both the person asking and the person being checked.
What is a trust check?
A quick way to confirm that someone you met online is who they say they are. You send them a link; they agree and verify a government ID and a live selfie with our identity provider, Didit. You then see a limited result: whether the check completed, the name on their ID, and when it was done.
What does the other person have to do?
Open the link, read who is asking and why, and decide. If they agree, they take a photo of their ID and a short selfie on their phone. It usually takes a few minutes. They don't need an account, and neither do you.
What will I see, and what won't I see?
You see: Trust Check Complete (or Not verified), their verified name, the type of ID, whether the selfie matched the ID, and when the check finished. If you chose the 18-or-older check, you also see whether their ID shows they are 18 or older.
You never see their ID images, selfie, document number, date of birth or address. Trust Engine doesn't store those either.
Which check should I choose?
ID check: Confirms they hold a valid government ID in their name and that a live selfie matches it.
ID check + 18 or older: Everything in the ID check, plus whether their ID shows they are 18 or older. Their date of birth is not shared. Good for dating.
Can I check someone without them knowing?
No. Nothing happens unless they open your link and agree. Before they decide, they see your name, the reason you gave, the name you know them by, and exactly what will be shared with you. They can say no, and you'll simply see that they declined.
Is this a background check?
No. Trust Engine confirms identity only. It doesn't look at criminal records, credit, employment history or anything else, and a completed check is not a guarantee of anyone's safety, honesty or character. Keep using your own judgement and meet in public places.
You may not use a result to decide on employment, housing, credit or insurance, or for any other purpose covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
How much does it cost?
From $3.00 per check, paid by the person asking, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. There is no subscription.
If the other person says no, or doesn't start the ID check within 7 days, you're refunded automatically. Once they've started the ID check there's no refund, because the check has been done, whatever the outcome.
How long do links and results last?
The link you send works for 7 days. A finished result stays on your private status page for 30 days, then it is deleted. Checks that never finish are deleted when the link expires.
Who is Didit, and what happens to the ID photos?
Didit is the identity verification company that checks the ID and selfie. The photos go straight to Didit, are used only for this one check, and are handled under Didit's own privacy terms. Trust Engine only receives the limited result described above.
What does Trust Engine keep about me?
For the person asking: your name, email, the reason you gave and the name you entered for the other person, plus payment status. For the person checked: the verified name, ID type, whether the selfie matched, when they agreed and which consent wording they saw. Everything is deleted on the schedule above, at most 30 days after a check finishes. See the Privacy page for details.
Who can use Trust Engine?
Both people must be 18 or older. We're starting in the United States.
